FINALLY got a chance to watch "Superman Returns" last week.
Ok, so I've got to get this off of my chest...
Although the actor did a good job of being Superman (I never thought of him as having all that much personality... just gently stoic), I am really disappointed with the promotion of alternative family arrangements that was cemented with this film. I mean... come on.. SUPERMAN! At the end of the film, I'm left with these thoughts:
Just goes to show you how secular "superheros" don't measure up to the example of Jesus. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big believer in finding God in the details of life and in stories, music, art, etc... but they're just glimpses, and not masterpiece definitions of Jesus' love, character, and power. But, because the legacy of Superman is so enshrined as a cultural ideal for Americans, I simply must protest these items. And while I'm not necessarily saying that I'm going to outlaw Superman stuff in my home, I will certainly be teaching my three little boys more about Character and Integrity than power and success.
However, I did think the scene of Superman sacrificing his own well-being for the sake of others was worth noting. As Christ followers and citizens of Heaven, we are called to lay our lives down for one another, even to the point of death. But there are many, many ways in which we can do that on a day-to-day basis, and we really need to make our sacrifices within the right priorities, or they can quickly become idolatry. Let THAT one sink in for a while, comments?

- Even Superman had sex outside of marriage.
- Your job to the world takes higher precedence than your commitment to your spouse and children... (a.k.a. FAMILY).
- It's ok to skip out on your woman who's given you every part of her heart, soul, and body if you feel you have some ultimate 'call' to fulfill.
- Having a lingering relationship with someone who's engaged to someone else is acceptable.
- When you're "The Man", certain moral obligations are ultimately 2nd place to your world-driven role.

These are "My Three Sons", Caleb, Marcus, and Micah. But, for the sake of order, you're seeing three pictures of Marcus (he's two years old) and one photo of Micah (9 months) and Caleb (3 1/2 years old). They are three awesome little boys, and my wife and I simply adore them! Can you blame us? We're pretty convinced that they're going to be real studs when they get older.
